Fancy Words

Look at me, with my fancy words... Today I picked Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). And, without looking, I knew what it was. And, using my fragrance checklist (the revised version), I decided that its aroma was camphoraceous (medicinal), terpenic (like a forest but not coniferous), and cineolic (menthol). Others describe it as herbaceous, earthy, spicy... I thought I detected spice after 20 minutes, but I can't be sure. I am sticking with my descriptions.

Interestingly, the primary chemical constituents of Tea Tree are:

  • Terpinene-4-ol
  • Gamma-Terpinene
  • a-Terpinene
  • Terpinolene
  • 1,8-Cineole
  • a-Terpineol
  • p-Cymeme
  • a-Pinene

So terpenic and cineolic track. I don't know what gives the camphoraceous odor... Do you?
